We are a clothing optional beach. We welcome you to plan your adventure anytime of the year with us for amazing saltwater fly fishing.
However, please note that unless you are PRIVATE GROUP reserving at least 4 of our rooms (8 anglers), you will be sharing the resort with our other couples, who may or may not be naturist/nudist.
If you are prefer to have the resort completely private to only your group & clothing required (or not, up to you), please book at least 8 anglers (4 rooms).
We can also extend the resort to your non-angler companions to join you to help you fill the rooms for your private group. Please contact us for a quote.

2 Garden Bungalows: Relax on private patios and rooftop decks, equipped with King Beds and a Futon.
2 Spacious 2nd Floor Rooms: Take in stunning ocean views from the large shared patio. Choose from a room with 2 Full-Size Beds or another with a King Bed and a Futon.
A Beachfront Suite: Experience luxury in a Private Bedroom with a King Bed and a separate sitting area with a Futon. ($75 per night surcharge for this room)
All our rooms feature private bathrooms, hot/cold showers, and floor/ceiling fans, bath & beach towels, shampoo/conditioner & shower gel.
Please note that we do not have TVs or AC units in the rooms. The breeze off the Sea and floor & ceilings fans make it comfortable throughout the night. Plus we have 3 hanging beach beds that our clients have found a great place to sleep and watch the stars!
Our accommodations can host up to 14 guests, 2 women per room. All King Beds can be converted to Twin Beds.

Our daily food trucks bring fresh fruits and vegetables, while we can also provide locally sourced fresh fish and lobster (in season). Daily Happy Hour includes 1 hour of free beer, cocktails and Tiki Teal punch for our anglers before dinner!
Airport Options & Complimentary Transportation
Arrive stress-free at Playa Sonrisa! Choose from 2 international airports: Tulum is the newest and best choice as it's only a 3-hour dive, while Cancun is a 5-hour drive. Our professional transportation ensures a comfortable journey with air-conditioned vehicles and complimentary beverage boxes. Our friendly drivers are happy to make multiple stops for snacks, lunch, and bathroom breaks along the way. All anglers groups of 2 more receive complimentary transportation from TULUM (there is surcharge if you prefer Cancun). All parties of the group must arrive in Tulum no later than 2pm on the same day and depart NO EARLIER than 2pm on the same day for the group transportation. Our driver will meet you with a sign for your group leader's name on it at the airport. You will receive email instructions about booking flights and transportation once deposit is paid. No credit allowed should you choose to rent car, miss your assigned group pick-up time etc.

Enhance Your Fishing Advneture with Our Amenities! Cool off in our new saltwater pool after a long day of fishing. Treat your body to a beach massage. Explore the sea with kayaks, stand-up paddle-boards, and snorkeling gear. Relax on floats and rafts or immerse yourself in live music, Mayan ceremonies, and tailored excursions. Dive enthusiasts will love our on-site dive shop, while snorkeling awaits you at our 200 ft dock with convenient boat pickups. We allow for 2 days for FREE time. If none of the above, float your boat, you can DIY fly fish from the shore or our dock right in front of Playa Sonrisa!
Our Team, Our Staff, Captains & Boats
We are thrilled to introduce our exceptional team at Playa Sonrisa, dedicated to making your adventure unforgettable! The owners, Blaney Teal and Steven Hessler, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, are now proud expats living in Xcalak and the owners of Playa Sonrisa Resort. Our team includes Maricela, your maid and breakfast cook, who has been with us for over 10 years. Her brother, Mario, takes care of the grounds, while her daughter-in-law, Deysi, handles dinner preparation and serving. You'll also meet Eli, Maricela's other daughter-in-law, who assists with rooms and breakfast. Maricela's husband, Captain José, leads our team of captains and boats, each accommodating two persons. They know these waters intimately and can't wait to take you out on the sea. Join us at Playa Sonrisa for an adventure of a lifetime!
What To Pack
We provide our guests with soft drinks, water, lunch and snacks out on the boats,. Make sure to bring biodegradable sunscreen (SPF30 is good), clothes that cover the arms and legs to protect against sunburn, hat that provides shade to your head and neck, and sunglasses with a restraining strap. Please make sure to bring all the line, leader, tippets, flies and any spares you’ll need. There’s no way to restock in Xcalak or nearby. And don’t forget your wading boots.
Can We Keep the Fish We Catch?
In Xcalak, we've implemented a catch-and-release program for our snook, permit, and bonefish for about ten years. Our salt-water fly fishermen swear by the program, which has kept our waters plentiful with these older, larger, wiser fish that our fishermen love. This program also provides the breeding stock necessary to keep the populations growing. Now that Xcalak is a national park and preserve, all fish are catch-and-release, ensuring the sustainability and health of our aquatic ecosystem for future generations to enjoy.
Booking Policy
Deposits, Cancellations & Refunds
Deposits: A 50% deposit per person is required to confirm your reservation.
Balance: Due 60 days prior to arrival.
Cancellations:
- 120+ days before arrival: Refund of deposit minus $150 per person.
- Less than 120 days before arrival: No refund unless a replacement is found, then a refund minus a 10% fee.
- No shows, late arrivals, and early departures: No refund
Additional Information:
- All taxes and rates are subject to change.
- Guide fees and other costs are non-refundable, including those unused due to weather.
- Travel and trip cancellation insurance is strongly encouraged.
- Surcharges for special requests may apply.
Do I need a Fishing License?
Whether you are Mexican or a foreigner, you will need a fishing license. (MXN$ 470 (about $30USD +/-) gets you a license good for one week of fishing) AND a daily Xcalak National Park entrance fee (MXN$64 +/-.) We will take care of the Park Entrance Fee for you. You can get your fishing license below. Or our captain is happy to help you get your fishing license!
Recommended Tips And Gratuities
We ask that tipping for our staff and team members be in US dollars.
Our Guides: $75 – $100 USD per day per boat (ex: 2 anglers is $37.50-$50.00 USD each)
Our Staff (Combined): $30 – $50 USD per day / per guest (may be paid in pesos if preferred - we can help you with the conversion)
Our Transportation Driver: $50 USD per group
Where Are We Located?
Playa Sonrisa Mexico is located at Km 7 Camino Costero, 77940 Xcalak, Q.R., Mexico. We are 1 hour south of the Cruise Ship Port of Costa Maya Mahahaul. About 2.5 hours south of the Tulum International Airport and 2.5 hours north of the International Chetumal Airport. The roads are well-maintained, paved and full of tourist. Coming soon is the Mayan Train which will open up a few more possibilities and be another option from the Cancun airport which is currently 5 hours from us.
What is the Weather Like?
In Xcalak, you can expect daily temperatures to range from 76°F to around 89°F. Xcalak boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year, providing ample fishing opportunities every month.
